International Conference on National Identity in a Time of Crisis
The Center for Ethics in Public Affairs at AUA is hosting an international conference on the topic of national identity on June 29 & 30.
About this Event
The Center for Ethics in Public Affairs at the American University of Armenia (AUA), in partnership with the New York University Global Institute for Advanced Study, the Armenian Society of Fellows, and the AUA Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences, is pleased to host an international conference on June 29-30.
This conference will explore foundational questions regarding the place, significance, and nature of national identity in a world facing a multitude of enduring and emerging challenges and uncertainties. A special invited panel will also address the role of historic monuments and cultural identity during times of crisis, featuring distinguished international scholars and experts.

- Dr. David Miller, University of Oxford, UK
On June 30, 11.00-13.00, a special invited panel will discuss the topic of Cultural Heritage and the Politics of Preservation in a Time of Crisis.

- Hermann Parzinger (President, Europa Nostra)
- Isber Sabrine (President, Heritage for Peace, CSIC)
- Tim Whalen (Director, Getty Conservation Institute)
In addition, over fifty local and international researchers will present their peer-reviewed papers across six parallel sessions.
The conference will be launched on Saturday June 28 at 7.30 pm with a recital by the pianist Kiril Gerstein and Soprano Ruzan Mantashyan playing music from their recently released CD, Music in Time of War.
Language: The official languages of the conference are English and Armenian, with simultaneous translation provided for the invited sessions.
